When Sunbathers Fled Danger, Viral Image Shows Lifeguard Sprinting ‘Full Speed’ In the Direction of the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, views the iconic shoreline as her own backyard. On that particular weekend night, she, similar to other others in the area, noticed pops reverberating across the community.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her home, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces on display made it clear trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the avenue, speaking to a duo who had run up the hill still dripping wet, she heard someone moving up at her rear. It was a lifeguard, dashing towards Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this blur of blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. It was just him heading in the opposite way that everyone was trying to flee, and hauling that sizeable pack and barefoot … He was sprinting towards something that undoubtedly every instinct would signal you to run in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely maximum effort sprinting.”

A Symbol of Courage In the Wake of Crisis

The image taken by Ching of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of acts of valour in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to back up the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, law enforcement and medical teams treating dozens of victims.

Collective Reaction and Solidarity

Doolan’s actions was a single example among several to be shared by the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the scene of the attack serving as a makeshift hospital. It was shared that colleagues were also seen taking action, such as rushing into the surf to assist people in distress.

Following the tragedy, statements of support circulated widely. A social media message conveyed appreciation for the lifeguards who showed that “goodness will always overcome evil”.

The team of rescuers issued a message, saying they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your thoughtful messages and solidarity. We are overwhelmed by the kindness shown towards our responders,” the organization wrote. “In time, we will tell our tales in the aim that it supports those impacted.”

Local Government Praise

Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many permanent lifeguards, remarked that the staff rose to the occasion from the moment the incident began through to late that evening.

“We have heard so many moving stories, but the widely-circulated photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is extraordinary,” commented a local official.

“The team exhibit dedication every day in keeping our internationally renowned coastlines safe for the public, but what we observed on that day should be commended.

“During this time of sorrow and come to terms with the horror of this heinous tragedy, I think it is important that we focus on just how much good we have observed in the presence of such hatred.”
